Designing a whole new LemFi

Isabel Ron-Pedrique, our VP of Brand and Design takes us behind-the-scenes of our new brand 'Ambition has no passport'. What changed, what we let go of, and who it’s all for.

Designing a whole new LemFi

You’re going places. We’ve rebuilt LemFi to keep up.

There’s a new logo, new colours and a home screen that puts what you need first. And there’s a line we’ll be living by for a long time: Ambition has no passport.

A rebrand is only worth doing if it changes something for the people using the app. So we asked Isabel Ron-Pedrique, our VP of Design and Brand, who led the work, why we did it and what it means for you.

TL;DR:

  • A home screen built around you: Send, Credit, Savings, Accounts, eSIM, and LemFi Cash sit up front^*^.

  • A new logo: rooted in where we started, designed for where we’re going.

  • A bigger and vibrant colour system: Lime and Purple at the heart, with a colour family for each product so you always know where you are.

  • A world with personality: Lemy, our shapeshifting lemon, illustrations that find humour in real life, and a voice with rhythm.

  • One belief at the centre: where you’re born shouldn’t decide how far you can go.

Why we rebuilt it

“The old app was built to send money. It was never built to move people forward. So this time, we started with the person, not the transaction,” says Isabel.

We were already building products for real problems. But from the outside, LemFi still looked like a remittance app. It didn’t show that we understood the life underneath the transaction.

“You can arrive somewhere new with 15 years of financial history behind you and lose all of it overnight, simply because the system doesn’t remember who you were before you arrived. That was the gap. Not our products. Our ability to show people that we saw them.”

The redesign had one job: prove, screen by screen, that LemFi keeps up with people going places. Wherever you’re headed next.

A small team with a big brief

The brief was simple to say and hard to do: rebuild LemFi in a way that reflects what we’re building, and gives people something to believe in, not just a new look.

Isabel built a small strike team to do it. She led the vision and worked hands-on in the design. Blake Bakken, a brand and identity designer based in California, shaped the identity and brand system. Kyle Platts, an illustrator based in London, brought the imagination and craft behind our visual world and our mascot, Lemy.

What’s new

A home screen that leads with you

The app now opens on Send, Accounts, eSIM, LemFi Cash, and, in the UK, Credit (subject to eligibility) and Savings. Products, benefits and offers that used to be buried in the app are now right in front of you.

“We built the app for people going places: growing a life here, looking after people back home, and living in the space between. Every product we make starts there,” says Isabel.

Sending money was where the old app stopped. It couldn’t help with the harder part: a credit history that didn’t travel with you. So we took a shape that’s distinctly LemFi and made it work for you, bringing forward the products and opportunities that matter most to you.

“They didn’t move countries just to move money. They moved to move their lives forward. Our job is to build the products that help them do it.”

A logo that looks both ways
LemFi Logo

“We wanted a logo that could look forward without forgetting where we came from,” says Isabel.

The logo had to answer some big questions. How does a brand with African roots grow across Asia and beyond without losing them? How does LemFi meet an AI-powered future?

The result holds both. Retro and futuristic. Grounded in our story, designed for what’s next.

Colour with room to grow
LemFi colour palette

Colour has always been part of LemFi’s personality. We took our Lime and Purple and turned up the energy: brighter, bolder, more expressive.

They now carry the optimism of the people we build for: people going places.

The palette grew with us, too. Every product now has its own colour family, with bright, mid, and deep tones. Each one feels distinct and still unmistakably LemFi. The same system runs from the brand straight into the app, so you can find your way around as we add more.

What we let go of

“Honestly, more of the old brand than I expected.” says Isabel

We started calling it a Refresh but went further with our CEO’s push to answer tough questions such as How do we show up in Asia? How do we go beyond Africa? How should we show up in an AI-powered world? What does a fintech with real purpose look and feel like?

Almost every part of the old identity got challenged, and most of it changed.

What stayed was the feeling underneath: the energy, optimism, and forward motion people already linked to LemFi.

“We stopped asking, ‘How do we modernise the LemFi people already know?’ and started asking, ‘What does LemFi need to become for where our customers, and the world, are going next?’”

Built to feel human

“We’re not just here to move money. We’re here to move people forward,” says Isabel. That meant we couldn’t look or sound like every other fintech. So we built a world with emotion, humour, and heart.

Lemy, our shapeshifting lemon, has a playful, very kawaii side. Our illustrations find the funny in real life. Even our words have rhythm, inspired by Nigerian funk, with repetition and cadence you can feel.

“If you’re building for people going places, you should look like you’re going somewhere too.”

Ambition has no passport

“Where you’re born shouldn’t decide how far you can go,” says Isabel.

Ambition travels long before people do. It’s the belief that there’s more ahead: a better career, a bigger opportunity, a stronger future for you and the people you love.

But when people move, the systems around them don’t always move too. Financial history disappears. Access shrinks. Potential has to prove itself all over again. We think ambition deserves better than that.

“Your passport might say where you come from. It shouldn’t decide where you can go.”

Where we go from here

Over the next 5 years, Isabel wants LemFi to grow from a brand people use to move money into a brand that stands for people going places, whether it’s in your career or literally across the globe.

“The best brands grow beyond the product that made them famous. Nike became bigger than shoes. Spotify became bigger than streaming. Today, people may find us because they need to send money. Tomorrow, I want them to stay because LemFi understands the life they’re building.”

The challenge is to grow across countries and cultures, keeping the authenticity and building on the needs of our users. The look can flex by market. The belief at the centre will only get stronger.

“In 5 years, LemFi will go beyond being the financial app for the Global South. LemFi will be the financial brand behind a generation going places, wherever they started.”
